The fruit is the colour of a pale green grape and about the size of a golf ball, with six faint ridges running from stem to base that give it a subtly segmented look. It is astonishingly sour — sour in a way that makes people’s faces change — with a bitter finish and a strange sweetness that arrives afterwards, several seconds late.
Children in households where it grows are generally not persuaded. Adults tend to come round to it.

What it is
Phyllanthus emblica, of the family Phyllanthaceae. Also written Emblica officinalis, an older name still widely used in the trade — same fruit, two names, which is worth knowing when comparing suppliers.
The tree is deciduous, growing to fifteen metres or more, with small leaflets arranged along slender branchlets so that the whole thing appears feathery. It’s native across the Indian subcontinent and grows through much of tropical Asia.
The fruit is used. It’s eaten fresh where it grows, pickled, made into preserves, and dried and powdered for everything else. Ours is ⟨SUPPLIER: dried fruit powder or standardised extract, and if extract, standardised to what⟩.
What the tradition says
Amalaki is among the most frequently mentioned substances in the classical Ayurvedic compendia, and is grouped with the rasayana — preparations associated with longevity and restoration. It is the principal ingredient of chyawanprash, a preserve still made across India and probably the most widely consumed Ayurvedic preparation in the world.
There’s a story that the tree was the first to appear on earth, grown from drops that fell during creation. It’s a nice story. It is not evidence of anything, and we mention it because it tells you what standing the fruit held, not because it tells you what the fruit does.
What the research shows
Here the honest answer runs against the marketing, and it’s worth taking slowly, because the claim in question is the single most repeated fact about this fruit.
Amla is famous for vitamin C. You’ll see it described as containing twenty times the vitamin C of an orange. Fresh amla is genuinely a good source — that part holds up, though the multiples quoted vary wildly between sources and many are inflated.
But two things complicate it. Vitamin C degrades with heat and time, so a dried, milled, shipped and shelved powder retains substantially less than the fresh fruit that generated the headline figure. And a good deal of the antioxidant activity historically attributed to vitamin C in amla appears to come instead from its tannins — emblicanins and related compounds — which is a different claim about a different molecule.
So a page that says “rich in vitamin C” about a dried extract is repeating a fact about a fruit you aren’t eating.
One consequence worth knowing: vitamin C carries authorised health claims in Great Britain, which most botanical constituents do not. Those claims are available to a product that actually meets the compositional threshold per serving. If ours does, we’ll test for it, declare the figure, and use the approved wording. Until we’ve measured it, we won’t imply it.
Beyond vitamin C, the human research on amla is limited — small trials, short durations, little independent replication. The usual picture.
Evidence: limited. Vitamin C content is well established in fresh fruit but variable after processing. Human trials on the fruit itself are small and largely unreplicated.
Safety and suitability
Amla is eaten as food across South Asia and is well tolerated by most people.
Speak to your GP or pharmacist first if you take anticoagulant or antiplatelet medication — some research indicates amla affects platelet function; take medication for diabetes, as blood glucose effects have been reported; have a history of kidney stones, as the fruit contains oxalates.
Not recommended in pregnancy or breastfeeding at supplemental doses, on the general principle that concentrated preparations aren’t the same as eating the fruit and the safety data isn’t there.

How it’s prepared
Traditionally the fruit is dried whole or in segments and milled to powder. Modern manufacture often uses solvent extraction to concentrate specific compounds, producing a standardised extract — a materially different product from dried fruit, more concentrated and with a different constituent profile.
Neither is wrong. They aren’t the same thing, and a supplier who won’t tell you which one they’re selling is telling you something.
